Pet Portraits at Pastel Image
by Artist Kathryn Biddle
When I was a child my very favorite toy in
the whole world was a brand new box of
crayons and a clean coloring book. That being
said, I sold my first drawing at ten years of
age for ten cents. It was a horse, and I drew
about ten pictures and sold them in school. I
made about a dollar, which was a lot of money
back then. I continued to draw animals as I
grew older just for the pleasure of it. At
eighteen I started grooming dogs, which I
have done for almost thirty-six years.
Grooming dogs is a hands-on practice which
has taught me the anatomy of dogs, and the
way the hair lays, which comes in very handy
painting portraits. I am also an
award-winning woodcarver, carving
decorative waterfowl.
Then my husband, who is also an artist and
woodcarver, fell through a roof and shattered
both of his wrists. Now breaking your wrists
is not the best thing to do when you're a
woodcarver. After he healed I thought he
might like to do some flat work, so I
purchased a small set of pastels for him. He
tried, and decided he had to work in three
dimensions. I didn't want to let them go to
waste, (they were good pastels), so I picked
them up and at the ripe old age of fifty found
out that I loved working with them. From
grooming, to woodcarving, to painting in
pastels, I am basically self-taught, but out of
all the things I have done, pastel painting has
become my passion. Medicinal and nutritional
herbs are another passion of mine, and I am
studying to become a Master Herbalist.
